Starting The Garden

I mentioned in my last post about how I wanted to start a garden. Today after the last of our bills were paid we had some cash to put towards starting the seedlings. It was a last minute decision to run out to the store before my husband had to go to work. I had repinned a pin for using a two liter for starting seeds. I was just going to recreate it with water bottles. After getting all the supplies except for the seeds and soil we headed to the lawn and garden center where I found everything I needed all in one convenient package.

We had talked about what else we wanted to grow besides tomatoes on the way to the store and I had brought up jalapenos and bell peppers. Before we found these packages we had choose the bell peppers. These packages come with everything; two types of seeds, 10 starter pellets, the container to grow it in and a clear lid to use as a greenhouse dome. At $5 a piece we saved money this way and ended up with two types of peppers (jalapeno and bell) and tomatoes (cherry and beefsteak).

After it was set up I had leftover seeds from all four plants. I am going to start a small binder with my left over seeds or ones I end up saving when I prepare a meal, along with the name and a few tips. I am imagining something like a CD sleeve. A small bag of seeds with a piece of paper over the top with suggested times to plant, or any special care needs.

Each pod contains two seeds, as per the directions. If it happens that we get two plants from each I will probably be giving a few away. So if you know me personally and want one, you better give me a heads up. I hope that each of these plants does well and produces a decent amount of fruit. That way I am not having to buy them from the store and can be able to share with family and friends. We still plan on doing a little bit more. Most likely a small patch of herbs and maybe a barrel of potatoes. The potatoes say 100 lbs. worth. In that case I would gladly be handing them out to people who don't want to buy them.

Pellets with seeds.
Labeled before I covered with soil.
Added soil, misted with water and put the dome on.
